Germany: Green party deciding whether to enter coalition talks at special party congress

The Greens held a small party congress to vote on the exploratory paper between the SPD and FDP and decide whether or not they should enter future coalition negotiations on Sunday in Berlin.

The Green party did not prevail on certain points in the explorations, including a speed limit on German autobahns and the demand for a moderate increase in the top tax rate, which should relieve those on lower incomes.

Green politicians were nonetheless optimistic ahead of the states’ council, as the Greens call their small party congress.

Green Party politician and Vice-President of the German Parliament Claudia Roth defended the results of the exploratory talks.

“I would have wanted more concrete measures for now, but the framework is there and now it's about actually building a coalition agreement with this framework, that everyone can live with,” explained Roth.

"Which, by the way, is not only good for the FDP, SPD and Greens but is good for this country and for the people in the country," she went on to say.

Green Party politician Jurgen Trittin said he was in ‘good spirits’ with regard to the voting and Anton Hofreiter, Co-Chair of the Green Party's parliamentary group, was 'very optimistic' about the coalition negotiations, should the points raised from the exploratory talks be agreed on.

The FDP, as the third party which would co-govern with the Social Democrats and the Greens in the so-called ‘Traffic Light Coalition,’ will decide on Monday whether to start coalition negotiations.
